02 — Saving links and pages

VeryWWW or Momentum?

Momentum is the best-known new tab: a daily photo, a quote, Focus Mode, to-dos and weather, with 2,000,000 users on the Chrome Web Store. Momentum Plus, $39.95 a year, adds notes, a Pomodoro timer, countdowns, world clocks and task-app integrations.

Pick Momentum if
you want a new photo every day, the same page in Firefox or Safari and on an iPhone, or your to-dos from Todoist, Asana or Trello.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want notes, a focus timer, countdowns and world clocks without a subscription, and without an account.

VeryWWW or Chrome’s own new tab?

Chrome’s new tab gives you a search box, shortcuts to your own or most visited sites, and a theme or a picture of your own. Chrome Help says customising it needs you signed in to a Google Account, with Google as your search engine.

Keep Chrome’s if
a search box and a row of shortcuts is all you want, and you’d rather add nothing to Chrome.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want your calendar, to-dos, notes and a focus timer on the same page, without signing in.

VeryWWW or Infinity New Tab?

Infinity puts a grid of site icons on HD wallpapers, with to-dos, a notepad, weather, a Gmail reminder and cloud sync. Its store listing says some of its merchant shortcuts may use affiliate links.

Pick Infinity if
you want a big grid of icons, Gmail alerts on the new tab and your setup backed up to its cloud.
Pick VeryWWW if
you’d rather keep everything in your browser, with a calendar and a focus timer, and no affiliate links.

VeryWWW or Bonjourr?

Bonjourr is a calm, open-source start page with photos that change with the time of day, quick links, notes, a Pomodoro timer and weather. It needs no account and runs in Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Edge.

Pick Bonjourr if
you want open source, a minimal page, or the same page in Firefox or Safari.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want a calendar, to-dos with reminders, a Shelf for your links and a side panel beside every page.

VeryWWW or Tabliss?

Tabliss is free and open source, with backgrounds from Unsplash or GIPHY and widgets for the time, weather, quotes, to-dos, notes and links. Its Chrome Web Store listing was last updated on 25 April 2022.

Pick Tabliss if
you want open-source widgets and animated backgrounds, in Firefox and Edge too.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want a calendar, a focus timer and a Shelf for your links on the same page.

VeryWWW or start.me?

start.me turns the new tab into a dashboard of bookmarks, RSS feeds, notes, to-dos and more than 3,500 widgets, the same on any device and in any browser. You can share start pages with a team or a class.

Pick start.me if
you follow RSS feeds, want one page in every browser, or share a start page with other people.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want no account and everything kept in your browser, with a focus timer and a side panel.

VeryWWW or Toby?

Toby saves your open tabs into collections and spaces you can share with a team. It’s free up to 60 saved tabs, then from $4.50 a member a month, billed yearly.

Pick Toby if
your team shares sets of tabs, or you save whole sessions to come back to.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want links, places, file paths and notes in folders of your own, and Desks to save a set of tabs, with nothing to pay.

VeryWWW or Raindrop.io?

Raindrop.io is a full bookmark manager: collections, tags, highlights and apps that run everywhere, free with unlimited bookmarks. Pro adds full-text search and permanent copies of pages.

Pick Raindrop.io if
you want your bookmarks on your phone, copies of pages that outlast the site, or to collect with other people.
Pick VeryWWW if
you want to file the passage, picture or email you’re looking at in one click, and keep it in your browser with no account.

Fair
questions.

Is there a free alternative to Momentum?

Momentum has a free tier of its own. For the things its Plus plan adds, VeryWWW, Bonjourr and Tabliss are free. Of the three, VeryWWW is the one with a calendar, to-dos with reminders and a focus timer together.

Which new tab keeps my things private?

VeryWWW keeps your things in your browser, with no account, server, analytics or ads. A few features talk to other services when you use them: weather comes from Open-Meteo, calendars are read from their provider, and site icons come from Google’s icon service. Bonjourr needs no account either, and Bonjourr and Tabliss are open source, so anyone can read their code.

What replaced Pocket?

Mozilla shut Pocket down and points people to Firefox’s own tab groups and bookmarks. To keep full copies of articles, Raindrop.io Pro does that. To keep the link and the passage that mattered, VeryWWW’s Shelf files them from the page in one click.

Can I bring my shortcuts with me?

Yes. During setup VeryWWW can import Chrome’s most visited sites, and it can import your Chrome bookmarks as shortcuts.

How did you check all this?
